✈️ Why Setting Matters in Romance (And Why I Pick Mine with Obsession-Level Detail)

Confession time: I’m a romance writer who plans her fictional vacations with more detail than most people plan their real ones. Seriously—spreadsheets may or may not have been involved. (Okay, fine. They were. But color-coded tastefully.)

Because when I’m crafting a love story—the kind that makes your heart race and your Kindle overheat—I want the setting to be more than just background. I want it to be a mood. A feeling. A full-body experience that transports you right into the scene... preferably with a cold drink in hand and a very attractive man glancing your way.

🌿 Welcome to the Wilder World

My current romance series follows the Wilder sisters—a fiercely fabulous crew running a high-end travel company that curates once-in-a-lifetime adventures. Think luxury meets wild landscapes, curated chaos, and the kind of escapades that make falling in love feel dangerously inevitable.

And that’s where setting steps into the spotlight.

🇬🇧 First Stop: The Isle of Skye, Scotland

When I started writing Wrecked by You, I knew I wanted the story to feel windswept, remote, and steeped in history—and Scotland’s Isle of Skye delivered in every way.

Craggy cliffs. Firelit castles. Misty trails that lead to unexpected shelter (and yes, there's only one bed). The raw, untamed beauty of the Highlands became the perfect mirror for two characters who were absolutely not ready to fall for each other... and yet.

It’s more than just aesthetics—it’s atmosphere. When the world outside is wild, sometimes the only safe place is each other. And that, to me, is the beating heart of romance.

🌺 Next Up: Costa Rica, Baby

Book Two lands us in the lush, vibrant jungle of Costa Rica, where another Wilder sister is about to meet her match—literally.

Imagine exotic wildlife, decadent eco-luxury, and just enough danger to keep things interesting. This is where opposites attract, rivals collide, and the tension is as thick as the tropical air.

And this setting? Very personal.

I’ve been there. Well, close—the jungles of the Yucatán and Guatemala when I was doing my grad school research on the Classic Maya. I’ve heard the guttural growl of a jaguar in the middle of the night—and trust me, there’s nothing quite like the realization that you’re sharing a sliver of rainforest with something that sees you as a snack.

Also, howler monkeys? Absolutely adorable until they scream like the world’s ending at 5 a.m. 😳

Still… the jungle is pure magic. The kind that makes your skin tingle and your heart race—for so many reasons.

💫 The Power of Place

I believe the best romance novels take you somewhere. Not just emotionally, but physically. You can hear the rain hit the windows of the stone cottage. You can taste the salt on your lips after a walk on the shore. You can feel the hum of anticipation when two people share a private rooftop moment in the middle of paradise.

I don’t just pick settings for the vibes. I pick them because they add depth, flavor, and fire to the story.

And if you think I’m stopping with just Scotland and Costa Rica… oh, sweethearts. I’m just getting started. There are six sisters and six luxurious locations. Four more to go!

So tell me—what’s your favorite romance setting?
I’m all ears—and already booking the fictional flights. ✈️💋
